Commercial tax collection up 19%

Hinting at the recovery of the economy from the impact of the economic slowdown, the collections of commercial taxes in Orissa surged by 18.73 percent in November 2009 compared to the same month in the previous fiscal.

The collections in the November increased by 18.73 percent to Rs 481.97crore compared to 13.96 percent growth achieved in October this year.

The progressive collections of commercial taxes up to the end of November this year increased by 6.53 percent which is higher than 4.78 percent achieved by the end of October 2009. The commercial taxes department could garner Rs 3450.63 crore as taxes compared to Rs 3239.18 crore during the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, sources said.

 

Importantly, the collections under all the heads recorded positive growth for the first time in the current fiscal in November. While the collections of Central Sales Tax (CST) increased by 29.96 percent to Rs 36.96 crore, the entry tax collections went up by 16.28 percent.

However, the progressive collections of the CST till the end of November this year continues to be negative. The total CST collections were Rs 285.39 crore compared to Rs 369.21 crore during the same period last fiscal.

Sources said, the progressive collections of value added tax (VAT) increased by 11.53 percent to Rs 2703.61 crore during Apr-November this year compared to the corresponding figure of Rs 2424.21 crore.

The entry tax collections turned positive for the first time during the current fiscal with 1.28 per cent growth during the first eight months of 2009-10.

During the month of November entry tax collections increased by 16.28 percent, mainly due to the vacation of the stay order of Orissa High Court pertaining to the collections of entry tax by the Supreme Court.

Besides, the collections of professional tax increased by 20.84 percent to Rs 61.36 crore compared to Rs 50.77 crore during Apr-November 2008.

While the collections of VAT from oil marketing companies increased marginally by 1 percent during this period, payment of taxes by the government owned Orissa State Beverages Corporation (OSBC) went up by 42 percent. However, the collections from the public sector National Aluminium Company Ltd (Nalco) and SAIL were less compared to Apr-November 2008.

The progressive collections of VAT and CST from SAIL was Rs 74.58 crore, compared to Rs 94.44 crore during the same period last fiscal. Similarly, the collection from Nalco was Rs Rs 33.38 crore compared to Rs 44.31 crore last fiscal. However, the payment of taxes by SAIL increased by 38 percent and that of Nalco by 1.14 percent in November.
