Commercial tax collection in the state has surged by 28.32 per cent during April-July this year at Rs 2,558.93 crore as against Rs 1,994.12 crore recorded in the corresponding period of previous fiscal.

The striking feature of commercial tax collection in the first four months of this fiscal has been the jump in collection through the e-payment mode. While last fiscal witnessed e-payment of 51 per cent, the payment of commercial taxes through the electronic mode has been more than 75 per cent during May-July in 2011-12.

"There has been a record jump in payment of commercial taxes through the electronic mode. The enhancement in e-payment will bring in greater transparency in the system. We expect commercial tax collection to exceed Rs 10,000 crore in the current financial year”, state finance minister Prafulla Chandra Ghadai told reporters.

Budgetary estimates had projected commercial tax collection at Rs 8,788.59 crore for 2011-12 while the commissionerate of commercial taxes had set a collection target of Rs 10,201.78 crore.

In the last fiscal, commercial tax collection in the state stood at Rs 8,018.37 crore of which Rs 4,097.16 crore came through the e-payment mode. During the April-July period of this fiscal, e-payment contributed Rs 1,904.16 crore to the overall collection of Rs 1,994.12 crore.

It may be noted that over 2.8 lakh e-waybills have been generated after the launch of e-payment facility. Besides, more than 1.12 lakh tax returns have been filed electronically.

Meanwhile, the commercial tax department of the state government has bagged the 'Best Project' award under 'Government to Business' e-services category at e-World Forum 2011. The award was received recently by P K Patra, additional commissioner (commercial taxes) from Jyotiraditya Scindia, Union minister of state for commerce and industries.
