The complaint against Aseervatham Achary, a key witness against former telecom minister A Raja in 2G spectrum scam, accusing him of amassing disproportionate assets was made on a fake letterhead of an MP, the CBI claimed today.
Sources in the investigating agency said the complaint was sent to it and the railway ministry, employer of Achary, in November.
The CBI after receiving the complaint had started initial probe against Achary and had spoken to the MP on whose letter head it was received.
During the course of questioning, the parliamentarian denied sending any such complaint to either the CBI or the railway ministry prompting the agency to shift focus on the person who could have forged the letterhead.
Raja had raised a point in his defence during the trial that Achary decided to become a CBI witness because there was a disproportionate assets complaint against him.
But during the cross examination, Raja's lawyer Sushil Kumar failed to make him concede that he falsely implicated Raja, or that he decided to become a CBI witness because there was a disproportionate assets complaint against him.
Kumar alleged that Achary broke the story of the 2G scam to a newspaper, because Raja had not supported his political ambitions of joining the Congress.
"Achary became a CBI mole in the telecom ministry as early as October 2009, which was months before he was actually called in for questioning by the agency," Kumar alleged.
Achary, however, denied the claims.
