The Congress does not conspire. It plucks the fruit when it is ripe...It is not yet ripe in Gujarat, Congress spokesman V N Gadgil said, replying to a volley of questions from reporters on the Gujarat situation.

Gadgil said the BJP is upto all its democratic tricks in the state but I don't think it will succeed.

Gadgil justified the state assembly deputy speaker's Chandu Bhai Dhabi's action in recognising the Shanker Sinh Vaghela group as a separate entity in the legislature, saying he (the deputy speaker) is within his right. He was also of the view that the speaker could not overrule the deputy speaker action.

Asked if he agreed with the opinion that there was a constitutional breakdown in the state, he said I won't go to that extent...Let us see how things develop

At the outset, Gadgil said the situation in the state was too fluid. He also had a dig at the BJP for virtually keeping in detention 16 of its legislators who had initially extended their support to the Vaghela group.

Asked if he had any information about the health of the assembly speaker, he said that according to reports the speaker was in coma.

Asked if the Congress would stake its claim to form the government with the help of the Vaghela faction, Gadgil said the Congress will do nothing at this stage.
