Congress today flayed the Mayawati-led Uttar Pradesh government for allegedly creating hurdles in way of the proposed Rajiv Gandhi Petroleum Institute in Amethi.

Amethi parliamentary constituency in Sultanpur district is represented by Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi. Congress president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi had laid its foundation on February 20, 2008.

Addressing the media here, UP Congress president Rita Bahuguna Joshi said the state government was more interested in spending crores of rupees for statues and non-productive expenses.

“Each statue being installed by Mayawati is worth almost Rs 80 lakh, while the state government could not provide Rs 60 lakh towards the land cost for the institute,” she added.

Joshi said if the state government failed to take appropriate action in this regard within 3 days, the party would take the issue into public domain.

“At present, the central government officials are in town in connection with the matter and we hope for a positive outcome,” she added.

Congress MP from UP Jagdambika Pal had also raised the issue in Parliament yesterday during zero hour alleging political vendetta on the Mayawati regime.

Bahuguna noted that a nexus of criminals, bureaucrats and the ruling party was at work in the state and crime had recorded new heights in UP.
