Congress failed to prevent Babri demolition: Yechury

Holding the BJP "directly responsible" for demolition of the Babri mosque in Ayodhya, CPI(M) politburo member Sitaram Yechury today said the Congress had also failed "in its duties to prevent the national shame".      

"Babri masjid ke dhwast hone ke mamle mein BJP ne khooni ka kam kiya aur Congress kotwal ki bhumika nahin nibha payee (BJP played the role of the murderer and the Congress failed in its duty as police captain to protect the Babri mosque)," Yechury said at a press conference here.      

Congress should have taken all-possible steps to protect the mosque, instead of leaving it to the mercy of those who brought the "shame on the nation", he said.      

Asked whether he meant that the Congress was equally responsible for the demolition, Yechury said, "Congress ka kam kotwal ka tha jo woh nahin nebha payee (the Congress had the duty of the police captain which it failed to discharge)."
