Meghalaya Governor R S Mooshahary was 'convinced' about the majority claim of the Congress, which has paraded its MLAs before him, and would invite the party to form the government after President's Rule was revoked in the state, Raj Bhavan sources indicated today.
The sources said that Congress leader D D Lapang would be invited to form the government.
The beleaguered Meghalaya Progressive Alliance's strength in the 60-member assembly declined to 26, excluding the speaker, after another UDP MLA Nimarson Momin resigned today.
Congress, on the other hand, claimed the support of 27 MLAs, excluding four MPA MLAs who had switched their loyalty to the party.
Even if the four were disqualified by Speaker B N Lanong now, the Congress would still enjoy a majority in the House by one seat.
Central rule was imposed in the state on March 18 after the governor cited a 'constitutional breakdown' in the wake of a controversial trust vote.
