Congress on Thursday suspended its Valsad district president and former union minister Uttam Patel from the party for six years.

Patel's suspension from the party follows complaints that he indulged in anti-party activity during the recent Lok Sabha elections in the state.

The Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) spokesman, Hasmukh Patel, said, "The party received several complaints that Patel had tried to sabotage the prospects of Kishan Patel, the party's candidate from the Valsad constituency in the Lok Sabha elections."

He said: "Despite being the Valsad District Congress chief, Patel had campaigned against party's candidate Kishan Patel to ensure that he loses the elections."

Patel said complaints were made against Uttam Patel by four MLAs, Valsad district youth Congress president, and other office bearers of the Valsad district Congress.

The observers for Valsad district "" Kadir Pirzada, Urmilaben Patel and Bhagubhai Patel "" have recommended to the party to appoint a new president for the Valsad district Congress.

Uttam Patel, who has been elected to the parliament several times from the Valsad Lok Sabha constituency, had demanded that he be fielded as the Congress candidate from the seat for the parliamentary elections one more time.

He had publicly opposed the candidature of Kishan Patel, who is a legislator from the Dharampur assembly seat.

Patel had said the party had literally gifted the Valsad Lok Sabha seat to BJP by fielding Kishan Patel as it's candidate.
