According to official data released today, the lower growth in October pulled down the growth during April-October this year to 3.9 per cent, compared with 6.5 per cent during the corresponding period last year.

Barring September, during 2003, the growth of the six sectors has been poorer than each corresponding month in 2002. During September 2003, the six sectors grew 5.9 per cent compared with 2.2 per cent during September last year.

While cement and finished steel were the only two sectors which registered growth rates of over 6 per cent during October this year, the growth rates in these sectors were also lower than in the corresponding month last year.

The low growth in the six industries, which account for nearly 27 per cent of the index of industrial production, could lower the industrial growth, economists said.

Industrial growth was estimated at 6.5 per cent in September mainly because of improved performance by the manufacturing and electricity sectors.

Finished steel production rose 6.8 per cent to 30,99,00,000 tonnes during October this year. In April-October, the production increased 7 per cent against 10.8 per cent in the corresponding period last year.

Cement production rose 6 per cent to 98.44 lakh tonnes during October this year. The growth in the first seven months was estimated at 5.3 per cent against 9 .3 per cent in April-October 2002-03.

Coal production fell 1 per cent in October against a growth of 3.6 per cent in the corresponding period last year. During April-October this year, the sector reported a 3 per cent growth against 5.5 per cent in the seven-month period last year.

Petroleum refinery products registered a negligible 0.1 per cent increase as against a double digit growth of 11.3 per cent during October last year. The April-October growth in the sector was estimated at 5.2 per cent compared with 0.5 per cent in 2002-03.

Electricity generation was up 1.6 per cent in October this year against 7.1 per cent growth in October last year. Generation of hydro and thermal power went up, while that of nuclear power fell by 14.84 per cent during the month.

During the first seven months of the current fiscal, power production grew by 2.8 per cent as against 3.9 per cent in the corresponding period last year. Crude petroleum growth was reported at 2.7 per cent during October this year as against 0.4 per cent in October last year.

In cumulative terms, this is the only sector to have reported a fall in production of 0.9 per cent during the first seven months of the fiscal. It had grown 4.5 per cent during April-October 2002-03. |
