A fire broke out in the Howrah bound Chennai-Howrah Coromandel Express in the wee hours on Friday when the train was proceeding towards the Bhubaneswar.
The fire was extinguished before spreading without any injury to the passengers.
The fire was spotted in the general compartment of the super fast express at the Lingaraj station when it was heading towards the Bhubaneswar station, said a spokesperson of the East Coast Railways (ECoR).
The passengers in the train are safe and the train had proceeded towards it destination but the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, said the official.
The railways officials suspect that the fire might have erupted due to the short circuit or discarded cigarette buds.
A GM level enquiry has been ordered into the incident. The General Manager of ECoR has asked for the television footage of the incident, the official said.
