Costly vegetables push inflation up to 4.10%

Driven by costly food articles like fruits and vegetables and pulses wholesale price index (WPI) based inflation increased to 4.10% for the week ended August 11 when compared with 4.05% in the previous week.

The annual inflation rate stood at 5.07% a year ago on August 12, 2006.

The ministry of commerce and industry which releases the inflation data also revised the inflation rate to 4.13% for the week ended June 16, 2007 as compared to 4.03% reported earlier.

The index for primary articles rose by 0.4% from the previous week with food articles rising by 0.7% and non-food articles declining by 0.1% during the period.

The index for manufactured products, which has a weightage of 63.75% in the WPI basket, rose by 0.1% mainly due to increase in prices of paper and paper products, chemicals and chemical products, non-metallic mineral products, transport equipment and parts. Prices of energy group remained unchanged during the week.
