Welcoming the government's move to put approvals to special economic zones (SEZs) on hold, the CPI(M) today demanded changes in the SEZ Act and Rules in the forthcoming Budget session.

The party, in a statement, called for reworking of the Land Acquisition Act, 1894, to strengthen the rights of those whose livelihood depended on the land that was acquired.

On demand for changes in the SEZ Act, the CPI(M) said it was essential to include a land use clause to put a ceiling on the area that can be allotted to an SEZ, to define the nature of land that may be used and to ensure that at least 50 per cent of the land is used for manufacturing and processing and 25 per cent for infrastructure.

The party also demanded that the government ensure a full-rehabilitation policy, remove tax and other concessions offered to the zones and guarantee the implementation of labour laws within SEZs.
