Addressing newsmen here, Namboodiripad said the CPM had been opposng the move right from the time the CBI was directed not to oppose the bail petition of Rao. He said the left parties would bring the matter before Parliament, but hoped the Prime Minister, Deve Gowda, would change his stand on the issue before that. The CPM leader said his party was committed to fight against the economic policies of the Rao regime, now being followed by the Gowda government.
However the CPM would not do anything that would cause the downfall of the government, he said. It was the duty of the leftists to protect the secular-democratic alliance at the Centre while at the same time the left would oppose the economic policy initiated by Rao, Namboodiripad said.
Namboodiripad said the election results in Kashmir was the first step towards solving the problems in the valley.
He said only a broad autonomy, more than what was prescribed in Article 370 of the Constitution, would help solve the problems in Kashmir, where people had a strong anti-Centre sentiment.
Namboodiripad said the October 11 by-election in Thalasseri had national importance as the Chief Minister, E K Nayanar's victory was essential to protect the left-secular-democratic ties at the Centre.
The left governments in Kerala, Tripura and West Bengal had a crucial role in stabilising the broad alliance at the Centre. Hence Nayanar's victory and the protection of the LDF government was significiant, he said.
Namboodiripad said the planning policy of the Centre from the Nehru era to the present day had serious drawbacks and only the left governments could help evolve an alternative to this at the national level.
