The Centre Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) have shed 43,000 employees during 2009-10, although they collectively reported over 10% increase in net profit during the fiscal.
The number of people employed in the CPSEs came down to 14.91 lakh people (excluding casual workers) in 2009-10 from 15.34 lakh people in 2008-09, showing a decrease of 2.80%, the Public Enterprises Survey, 2009-10 has stated.
"One fourth of the manpower was in managerial and supervisory cadres," it added.
The trimming of workforce took place in a year when 217 state-owned units' net profits increased by 10.40% to Rs 92,593 crore in the last fiscal from Rs 83,867 crore in 2008-09.
The profits of profit-making companies grew by 10.1% to Rs 1.08 lakh crore in 2009-10, compared to Rs 98,488 crore in the previous fiscal and loss of loss-incurring units jumped 8.35% to Rs 15,842 crore in the last financial year, compared to Rs 14,621 crore in 2008-09, the survey said.
However, the turnover of CPSEs reduced by 2.87% to Rs 12.35 lakh crore in 2009-10, compared to Rs 12.71 lakh crore in the previous fiscal.

Further, it said salaries and wages in all CPSEs went up by 9.41% to Rs 90,863 crore in 2009-10, compared to 83,045 crore in 2008-09.
As on March 31, 2010, the number of CPSEs have increased to 249 from 246 in 2008-09.
