For his contribution to the Indian biotechnology sector, D Balasubramanian, who has been associated with the University of Hyderabad, Shantha Biotechnics and L V Prasad Eye Institute, has been conferred with the ‘BioSpectrum Life Time Achievement Award 2009’.

BioSpectrum awards have been constituted to recognise contributions of companies in the biotech sector. The awardees are decided on the basis of a survey conducted by ‘BioSpectrum-ABLE Top 20’ conducted during June-July every year. Co-chairman and MD of Jubilant Organosys, Hari Shankar Bhartia, was awarded the BioPerson of 2009 award. The BioEntrepreneur award was given to Apurva Shah and Binoy Gardi of Veeda Clinical research for emerging as a global CRO.

ReaMetrix, which started in Bangalore received the

BioProduct of 2009 award for becoming the first company in the world to successfully pioneer an FDA-cleared dried-down product to measure CD4 counts that needs no refrigeration.

The product, Dry Tri-T STAT, helps in HIV detection and management. The world’s first US FDA approved product, available in a dry form, could replace the currently widely used liquid-based alternatives in HIV detection kits which make them dependent on expensive and complex cold chain network. The ReaMetrix product is expected to reduce the cost of HIV tests.

Among other awards, the BioPharma company award was bagged by Serum Institute of India, and the BioAgri Company award went to Rasi Seeds.
