"The Delhi Jal Board has conveyed that it is willing to fund Rs 300 crore for the building of the 40 Mw Renuka hydel project," said Director of the H P Power Corporation, Tarun Kapoor.
The H P Power Corporation, which is a state-run company, has been assigned to build the 40 Mw Renuka project. "Some 1,500 hectares of land will have to be acquired for the project," Kapoor told Business Standard.
Delhi will get water from the reservoir of the Renuka dam. Officials say the detailed project report (DPR) of the water supply scheme has already been handed over to the central water commission last year.
In addition to funding the Rs 300 crore Renuka hydel project, the Delhi government has already agreed to fund 90 per cent of the Rs 2,300 crore water scheme project to Delhi as it would receive 23 cusecs (cubic metre per second) for nine months in a year.
The water project has been delayed by over fifteen years largely due to the delay in the removal of trees. According to estimates, some 250,000 trees need to be axed in an area of 485 hectares in the Sirmaur hills of Himachal Pradesh.
Sources said the state forest department would get 5 per cent of the revised cost of the project, which would be spent on tree plantation in the region.
