A demand was made in the Rajya Sabha today that the government should suspend IPL and order a CBI probe into its affairs, following allegations of black money and match-fixing against its Commissioner Lalit Modi.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Shivanand Tiwari (JD-U) said funds of the IPL and the cricket board BCCI should be confiscated.

"Players are being auctioned and the sport is being prostituted...," Tiwari said. Quoting media reports, he said income tax authorities are said to have found evidence against Modi, including use of black money and match-fixing in the last four years.

He said according to these reports, Modi owns a private jet, a fleet of luxury BMW cars. "He played a role in fixing of matches," Tiwari said.

He said while the IPL and BCCI were involved in money spinning, sports like hockey and wrestling are being neglected. "Hockey players are forced to go on strike for a lakh or two rupees," he said demanding that the IPL and BCCI should be taken over and handed to the Sports Ministry.
