The boom in housing industry in the periphery of Chandigarh has given an impetus to the demand for accessories used in modern construction. Another factor that has increased the demand for designer inputs for construction are the new units which have come up in the foothills of Himachal Pradesh.

With a spurt in the number of companies manufacturing vetrified tiles in the region, prices have slashed by 50 per cent. This has increased demand for vetrified tiles threefold.

Talking to Business Standard on the sidelines of the inauguration of "Inside-Outside Mega Show" in Chandigarh today, Rajiv Sharma, a local architect said with the corporate culture picking up in the region, the pattern of construction was changing. Earlier, Chandigarh used to have a culture of reasonably large houses that has been replaced with group housing societies now. People do not have time to buy construction material and engange labour for many days. They prefer to buy readymade kitchens and bathrooms. The purchase of readymade doors, bath cubicles and kitchens saved on both time and money, said Subhash Gupta, a buliding contractor. He said, "Since we indulge into bulk buying it costs cheap and saves a lot of energy".

Though the cost of cement and steel has been increasing persistently, the cost of other items is coming down, says Anup Sachdeva, coordinator of the show at Chandigarh.

The wooden flooring that was priced at Rs 200 per square feet is now available at Rs 80 per square feet. So the fall in prices of such items has revolutionised the art of construction in Chandigarh, he added.

The "Inside-Outside Mega Show" will be organised at the Parade grounds in Chandigarh from 9-12 February.

Various players from the construction-related sector are displaying their products in around 200 stalls. According to Sachdev, the participation has increased by 25 per cent as compared to last year due to the immense housing potential anticipated by the market players.

"Business India Exhibitions" is also contemplating starting the annual fair at Jallandhar from next year.
