The state textiles and handloom department plans to work on improvement of designs of the famed traditional handloom products to make them more marketable in the international markets.

The improvement in design is being planned to enable these products to compete against the products of other overseas markets. The design improvement, however, would be taken up without compromising the traditional pattern. “We want to work on the improvement of designs of the handloom sarees to make them more marketable both within the country and abroad. We want our handloom products to be globally competitive”, Arati Ahuja, the state textiles and handloom secretary said here.

The state government has initiated talks with internationally reputed design makers and the national institutes like the National Institute of Design (NID) and National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) for this purpose. “The state government has decided to hold the International handloom exhibition in the state for the first time in the February 2010 where the foreign buyers will be invited. We have initiated talks with the Apparel Export Promotion Council (APEC) under the Union ministry of textiles to organize the international exhibition”, Ahuja added.

The artistically designed handloom products are unique in terms of weaving pattern and design.
