Emphasising the need to engage in outsourcing to improve the quality of service, Union minister of state for finance S S Palanimanickam on Saturday called on the government departments to determine their boundaries of outsourcing.

"Globalisation has a relentless logic of its own and there is no escaping the larger question on outsourcing. It is the task of the departments concerned to determine their boundaries of outsourcing ? what must be done inside the department and what should be outsourced," he said.

He was addressing the valedictory of the three-day World Customs Organisation (WCO) ICT conference here.

Pointing out that IT has brought about a revolution in every sector, the minister lauded the efforts of the customs department in adopting change.

"To ensure the success of outsourcing, Customs should define the services and levels expected to be delivered by the end-user. This can be achieved through extensive consultation with stakeholders," he added.

Palanimanickam commended the role of WCO in creating awareness on technological imperatives required for adoption by customs organisations worldwide.
