"The Centre is totally responsible for frequent rise in fuel prices and now they are shifting the burden on the states to slash tax on these items," Dhumal told reporters here.

Dhumal said 16 per cent tax levied on diesel levied by the state was already lower than a majority of the states, including Petroleum Minister Murli Deora's Maharashtra, hence there was no need to further reduce it.

Taking swipe at the UPA government, Dhumal said the Centre always take recourse to the alibis that price hike was due to rise in prices of crude oil in the international market.

The Chief Minister also demanded to know that why prices of fuel were cheaper in neighbouring Pakistan and Bangladesh.

"On one hand Finance Commission asks the states to generate their own resources and on the other the Centre asks us to slash taxes," Dhumal said.
