Radioactive releases from the proposed plant of Nuclear Power Corporation (NPC) in Maharashtra are expected to be insignificant and their impact would be negligible, according to the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (Neeri).

The state-run nuclear power major’s proposed 10,000-Mw plant in Jaitapur would ensure safety in design, proper maintenance of the ‘exclusion’ and ‘sterilised’ zones, which would meet AERB’s requirements.

During emergency conditions, NPC would take necessary measures to ensure that radiation doses received by public and plant personnel are well within the limits prescribed by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board.

Neeri’s observations are part of the final environment impact assessment report for the Jaitapur project. The report would soon come up for hearing at the expert appraisal committee attached to the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

Neeri’s inputs further say there would be no discharge of conventional pollutants in the aquatic environment, so marine flora and fauna would not be affected. The thermal discharges of condenser cooling water would not exceed the stipulated standards and would not put aquatic creatures in danger.
