Srinagar: In a sudden flare-up of violence in Kashmir, 17 people, including a policeman, are killed and over 70 injured with mobs torching several government properties and a school, some of the trouble triggered by a TV report alleging desecration of the Quran in the US.

New Delhi: Asserting that India's "strategic autonomy" would not be compromised while seeking healthy ties with major powers, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh says it is too large a country to be "boxed" into any alliance or regional arrangements.

Tuesday

Srinagar: Violence continues to rock Kashmir Valley as at least 25 people, including seven policemen, are injured with protesters targeting houses of two former legislators and clashing with security forces at various places.

Srinagar: The National Conference decides to send a five member delegation headed by party president Farooq Abdullah to the all-party meeting in Delhi to reiterate its stand on withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act and restoration of autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir.

Wednesday

New Delhi: The all-party meeting on Jammu and Kashmir decides to send a delegation of political leaders to the state to assess the ground situation but failed to agree on the issue of contentious issue of withdrawal or dilution of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act.

Poonch (JK): Three persons are killed and 10 others injured when police open fire on a mob trying to set ablaze a missionary school in Mendhar town of Poonch district, after which curfew was imposed in the area.

Thursday

Srinagar: At least 15 persons are injured in fresh clashes in Kashmir while curfew continues without relaxation for the fourth successive day in Srinagar and other major towns even as a kin of a senior separatist leader succumbed to injuries raising the toll in the current unrest in the Valley to 91.

New Delhi/Kolkata: National Conference rules out resignation by beleaguered Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah as he got backing from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who said he was doing a "tough job" and needed "time and support".

Friday

Srinagar: Three persons are killed and 30 others injured as violent protests continue at several places in Kashmir Valley where curfew remained in force in Srinagar and other major towns for the fifth successive day.

Lucknow: Efforts to delay the judgement in the Ramjanambhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute beyond Sept 24 are rerebuffed by the Allahabad High Court which dismisses a plea for mediation saying it was aimed at "creating obstruction" in the final disposal of the matter.
