JDS leader H D Kumaraswamy today accused the BJP of defaming him and his father, former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, by dragging their name into the shoe throwing incident in which a man flug his footwear at Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa.

Referring to the incident, where an alleged JDS sympathiser hurled a shoe at Yeddyurappa during an election rally at Hassan recently, Kumaraswamy told reporters that BJP was trying to overplay the incident to gain sympathy. "Such tactics will not give them the desired results," he said.

Asked to comment on the allegation that he was behind the incident, Kumaraswamy said that he had no role to play in it. Taking on the chief minister, he warned him against making 'provocative statements' as this angered JDS party workers.

Commenting on incidents of violation of code of conduct and seizure of cash and goods he said that those found violating election rules should be immediately disqualified or announcement of results stalled till their case is investigated. He also suggested that the money seized by Election Commission should be used to improve the electoral system.
