EAC-PM member Ashima Goyal calls for MNREGA-like scheme for urban poor

Clarifies views are her own and not those of Advisory Council, as she also calls for greater spending on primary health

Expecting the government to come out with more packages,  Ashima Goyal, a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) on Saturday suggested that there should be a scheme like the one under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA)  for the urban poor.

“As lockdown eases, people go out and you may see more direct demand stimulus which may take the form of DBT (direct benefit transfer) or infrastructure spending. My personal view is that there is scope for an urban MNREGA where you provide employment to the poor,” Goyal said at a PHDCCI
