In what is perceived as a setback for the BJP, the Election Commission has rejected the suggestion of the Gujarat state government to hold early Assembly elections.

The commission has stated that the dates for state Assembly elections could be set for November and December as against the schedule drawn by the state government for September and October. In an official statement, the commission has made it clear that a final decision will be taken only after the atmosphere is conducive for the polls.

The three-member commission has formulated its decision about not holding early elections after visiting the state.

Official sources say the commission will undertake another visit to the state on October 15 before arriving at a final decision.
