The growth rate of employment during 1998-2005 was of the order of 2.78 per cent per annum. This is considerably higher than the growth rate of 1.75 per cent observed in 1990-1998.
The latest Economic Census released today says that employment growth in rural areas was 3.88 per cent whereas in urban areas, it stood at 1.70 per cent.Out of the total employment of 100.9 million, 78.3 million were males, 20.2 were females and around 2.4 million were children.
Maximum growth of establishment during 1998-2005 was observed in Mizoram followed closely by Tripura, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The highest growth rate of employment was however observed in Jammu and Kashmir followed by Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Haryana.
