Election to the post of Speaker to be held tomorrow

Election to the post of Speaker in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly will be held tomorrow.

NCP leader and former Finance Minister Dilip Walse-Patil is the nominee of the ruling Congress-NCP combine.

While BJP Legislator Girish Bapat is the candidate of the Sena-BJP.

Congress has 82 MLAs and NCP 62 in the 288-member House while Shiv Sena has 44 and BJP 46 MLAs.

Principal Secretary (Legislature) Anant Kalse said he received two sets of nominations each for both the candidates.

Walse Patil's candidature was supported by Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, Home Minister R R Patil and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Harshvardhan Patil.

Bapat's nomination was supported by Subhash Desai and Suresh Jain (Shiv Sena) and Eknath Khadse and Sambhaji Pawar (BJP).

Kalse said all the four sets of nominations were found to be valid on scrutiny.

The last day of withdrawal is before 1000 hours tomorrow. The election will be held between 1100 hours and 1500 hours.
