Electricity connections in rural households in Odisha have almost doubled from 18.86 per cent in 2001 to 35.6 per cent in 2011 compared to the urban households, as per the Census-2011 data for the state.
The data revealed that the number of rural households have increased by about 22 per cent from 6.673 million in 2001 to 8.14 million households in 2011. Similarly, the total households in the state numbered at 7.87 million in 2001 have gone up to about 9.66 million household in 2011.
The percentage of households using electricity in rural and urban areas has increased to 43 per cent in 2011, compared to 26.9 per cent in 2001.
Similarly, 62.8 per cent of rural households and 15.3 per cent of the urban households are still using kerosene as main source of lighting. The dependence on kerosene in the state has decreased 16.8 per cent in the last decade. About 0.6 per cent of the totals households are still relying on other sources for lighting.
It may be noted that, a ‘household’ in Census is defined as a group of persons who normally live together and take their meals from a common kitchen unless the exigencies of work prevents any of them from doing so.
As per the house-listing and housing Census, the houses in the state increased from 9.87 million to 12.76 million.
