Essar Power Ltd (EPL), the first independent power plant operator in the country, has recorded a 51.2 per cent growth in power generation at its Hazira plant during the last fiscal year, even as the aggregate power generated by the stations under the state-owned Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) dropped by 10 per cent during the period.
GEB has generated 22,882 million KwH during the last fiscal year, showing a 10.4 per cent drop from the power produced during 2001-02.
The total power generation by the private players in Gujarat including EPL and the Ahmedabad Electricity Company (AEC) during the last fiscal year was 17,106 million KwH, up 46.1 per cent from 2001-02.

However, AEC, a company under Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd, has recorded a meagre 1.1 per cent growth in power generation during the last fiscal year.
During fiscal 2002-03, Essar Power has generated 2,975 million KwH against its highest production of 1,968 million KwH during fiscal 2001-02.
Capacity utilisation at the Hazira plant reached its highest at 78 per cent during the last fiscal year.
EPL is targeting up to 100 per cent capacity utilisation during the current year.
