EU airline carbon discount signals poor demand

The indicated discount of European Union aviation carbon allowances for December over those for all emitters, including factories and power stations, shows that some traders may be concerned that airlines will be excluded from the programme, Bloomberg New Energy Finance said.

The discount on Monday was euro 19 cents and was as wide as 42 cents on March 15, according to data from the ICE Futures Europe exchange in London.

Monday’s spread is based on the assessed settlement price by ICE for the aviation allowances on March 16.

The widening discount “signals low demand for EU airline allowances in the midst of concerns of their future value,” said an analyst at New Energy Finance in London.
