Bringing cheers to the state finance minister Parfulla Chandra Ghadai, the collection of excise revenue in Orissa during 2009-10 surged by 28.2 percent compared to the previous fiscal. In the process, it crossed the collection target fixed for the year.

The excise revenue collection during the last fiscal was Rs 846.13 crore compared to Rs 660.04 crore in 2008-09. The state government targeted to collect Rs 800 crore in 2009-10, but the actual collection exceeded the target by Rs 46.13 crore (by 5.77 percent).

Good growth in the collection of excise revenue in districts like Cuttack, Jajpur, Kendarapara , Khurda, Puri, Nawarangpur, Kandhamal and higher payment of excise duty by the Orissa State Beverages Corporation (OSBC) helped the government to cross the target, sources said.

The districts which failed to achieve the target are Balasore (98.25 percent), Bhadrakh (97.04 percent), Mayurbhanj (90.91 percent), Nayagarh (69.08 percent), Angul (97 percent), Baragarh (96.59 percent), Bolangir (88.34 percent), Deogarh (89.49 percent), Dhenkanal (82 percent), Keonjhar (95.48 percent), Sambalpur (93.19 percent).

Similarly, Boudh (97.04 percent), Kalahandi (98.03 percent), Malkangiri (79.76 percent), Nuapada (93.93 percent) and Raygada (97.1 percent) also fell short of the target.

However, the districts like Cuttack (101.04 percent), Jajpur (101.4 percent), Kendarapara (104.33 percent), Khurda (110 percent), Puri (139 percent), Nawarangpur (102 percent) and Kandhamal ( 109.33 percent) were able to exceed the target and contributed to the overall increase in the revenue. The contribution of the Orissa State Beverages Corporation (OSBC) was Rs 578.22 crore in 2009-10 compared to Rs 531.3 crore in the previous fiscal.
