Two persons were killed and 50 injured in a string of bomb explosions across the Valley even as the newly carved out Intelligence Field Unit (IFU) of the state CID recovered a huge amount of arms and ammunition in the city yesterday.
Police said two persons who were reportedly carrying an improvised explosive device on a bicycle were killed and few others injured when the explosive device went off accidentally. The blast shook the area and police said the bodies were mutilated beyond recognition. Senior police and security force officers rushed to the spot immediately and the area was cordoned off.
Searches were also mounted by the security forces. The injured were shifted to the hospital. The blast triggered panic as bystanders ran helter skelter for cover.
Police said 20 persons were injured, three of them seriously, when some unidentified persons hurled a powerful handgrenade in a park in Anantnag town late on Tuesday evening. The injured were shifted to the hospital. No one has owned responsibility for the blast.
In yet another powerful handgrenade explosion 25 persons were injured, six of them seriously, when unidentified militants attacked a passing BSF vehicle at Kupwara in North Kashmir. The vehicle was damaged.
The State Government has fully re-activised Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) and it has become operational for the first time after a gap of seven years. In its major operation the CIK yesterday recovered huge quantity of arms and ammunition from two downtown localities in Srinagar. The recoveries effected followed arrest of four militants belonging to Hizbul Mujaheedin and Harkatul Ansar. The recoveries made included four Pika guns, one Sniper Rifle, rocket launchers and huge quantity of ammunition and explosives devices. The CIK IFU is headed by additional S P Mr Nissar Ahmed.
