There was a loud bang and many suspected that a bomb blast has been triggered, said panic- struck people of the residential locality where a naval aircraft crashed today.

"We heard a big explosion and came running out of our homes only to see smoke billowing out of the three-storey building," said 60-year-old Sudhakar Reddy.

A Kiran MK-II trainer -- part of the four-plane 'Sagar Pawan' aerobatic team-- failed to pull up from a dive, went out of control into a spiral and hit the building as the planes were breaking away from the formation and going in different directions in a tragic start to airshow "India Aviation 2010".

The whole area was cordoned off with security forces asking people to stay away since highly inflammable plane fuel lay spread around.

With the plane having pierced the top floor, government agencies found it difficult to extricate the mangled remains.
