Prasanta Das, a farmer in Singur whose land was acquired for the small car project of Tata Motors, allegedly committed suicide today.

The body of Das, an inhabitant of Khaserbheri village which is part of the project site, was found hanging from a tree this morning, the police said. Investigations are on into the cause of his death, they added.

Das was one of the earliest members of the Trinamool Congress-backed Krishi Jomi Bachao Committee,  and had not taken the compensation money from the West Bengal government, its convenor Becharam Manna said.

The Das family was dependent on the one-and-half acre owned by them, and the move to take over the land had caused distress to the family, Manna added.

A similar incident had taken place here in February when Haradhan Bag, whose land had been acquired without his consent, committed suicide.
