Amid acute shortage of storage space for foodgrain in Punjab, the employees of Food Corporation of India (FCI), under the banner of FCI General Staff Union, held wrong policies of the higher management responsible for the enormous foodgrain losses.

They alleged that the FCI management is harassing the employees by calling them responsible for foodgrain loss, which they claim are stored in an unscientific manner and in an open plinth across the state.

FCI General Staff Union, President Ramesh Chand Rana said, “In the last one year, around 400-450 employees were chargesheeted by the department on account of storage, transit and destination losses. In Punjab, there are 4200 employees, so one can well imagine the situation.”

Punjab has about 9.4 million tonnes (mt) of covered space and about 10 million mt of covered area for storage purpose. Earlier, the Punjab government had also demanded creation of additional storage capacities and fast movement of food grain.

They added that they will initially submit a memorandum to the management and if things do not work out, they would sit on a ‘dharna’.
