Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) of Maharashtra has issued notices to producers and distributors of leading milk brands in the city and neighbouring Thane district.

The administrator asked them to show cause why action should not be taken against them for failing to prevent milk adulteration, the FDA said today.

"Brands, such as Mahanand, Aarey, Gokul and Warana, have been asked to "explain why action should not be taken for their failure to take precautionary steps and follow rules and directions issued by the FDA to prevent adulteration of milk," FDA said in a press statement here.

In January, the Food and Drugs Administration had directed all milk manufacturers to streamline milk distribution in Mumbai and Thane districts by issuing licences to wholesalers or distributors or C&F agents so that milk was distributed only from booths or authorised shops and not from streets, FDA added in the statement.
