Fish culture is fast spreading in the lakes, rivers and streams of the hill state.
“In the last two years, over 22,981 tonnes of fish worth Rs 11,811 lakh was produced in the state.The much sought after but rare trout fish production was over 44 tonnes in the state run fisheries farms in the last two years, earning almost Rs 212 lakh revenue,” a spokesman of the state government said.
The state fisheries department has provided full time work to 3,558 fisherman who fish in the main reservoirs of the state in the Gobind Sagar, Pong dam, Chamera in the last two years.These fishermen have produced 3977 tonnes of fish worth Rs 20.60 crore from these water bodies.
Since fishing in these reservoirs is a risky activity, fishermen have been insured with Rs 50,000 in case of permanent disability and Rs 100,000 in case of death.Besides a fisherman relief fund scheme has also been formulated. To ensure a sustained yield from these reservoirs a ‘close season’ from June to July has been enforced by the state government.
