Participants at a recent workshop conducted by the Chennai base of Fishery Survey of India, also propagated modern fishing practices to converse resources.
The workshop brought together fishermen, representatives of fishermen associations, officials and scientists of fisheries department of Tamil Nadu.
Presiding over the workshop, M P Nirmala, director of fisheries, government of Tamil Nadu, exhorted the fishermen of traditional sector to adopt eco-friendly fishing gears that address the concerns environment conservation.
She further suggested to have a responsible development in aquaculture including prawn culture fisheries in Tamil Nadu to augment the fish production in the state.
Dr V S Somvanshi, director general, Fisheries Survey of India stressed on the necessity to expand fishing into deeper areas after equipping the existing mechanised boats with electronic gadgets like echo sounder and GPS.
