Four mega steel plants for Chhattisgarh

During the meeting, Singh hinted that a major portion of steel produced in the UMSP should be utilised for development of infrastructure within the state

The Union Government had finalised four locations in Chhattisgarh for setting up ultra mega steel plant (UMSP) propelling the state government to draw design for its utilisation in state's interest.

According to state officials, the ministry of steel had completed the work of finalising the locations for setting up four ultra mega steel projects (UMSP) in Chhattisgarh as part of its plan to establish large steel capacity in the country. While two places have been finalised in the Naxal heartland in Dilimili (Bastar) and Geedam (Dantewada), Dagori (Bilaspur) and Rajnandgaon would be the other two where the Centre planned to set up steel plant.
 

The ministry had decided to set by special purpose vehicles (SPVs) for executing the proposals of mega steel plants. The secretary in the ministry of steel, G Mohan Kumar met Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh and discussed about the formation of SPVs for developing the UMSPs.

"The Chief Minister has thanked the Government of India for listing out locations in Chhattisgarh for establishing UMSPs and has assured that the state government will extend full cooperation and support in implementing the projects," a state government spokesperson said.

During the meeting, Singh hinted that a major portion of steel produced in the UMSP should be utilised for development of infrastructure within the state. The iron-ore produced in the state that had been endowed with world class steel making raw material would be used in the projects.

Singh said the state government would be designing plan to add value to the steel within Chhattisgarh so that it could generate employment for locals.
