Garment Exports Up 15 Per Cent In August

Exports of readymade garments from India registered an increase of 15.35 per cent in the month of August.

Exports to restricted or quota countries, were up from 71 million pieces in August 2001 to 81.9 million pieces in August 2002. In value terms, exports were up 16.25 per cent at Rs 331.9 crore. Total exports from the country in the first five months of the current fiscal have touched $1.845 billion, this is 30.75 per cent of the export target of $6 billion for 2002-03. In the April-August period, exports to restricted countries were up 9.79 per cent in terms of quantity and 11.63 per cent in value.

 

According to figures compiled from shipping bills and certified by the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), exports to the US were up 41.5 per cent in the first five months of the current fiscal as compared to April-August 2001-02.

In value terms, however, exports were up only 17 per cent. During the five-month period, exports to the European Union fell 2.85 per cent in quantity terms.

However, in value term, exports were up 10 per cent. Exports to Canada fell both in quantity as well as value terms.

Exports to non-quota countries were at $120 million in the April-August period, much lower than $362 million during the corresponding period in 2001-02.
