The Goa government has decided to take strict action to check dust pollution caused by mining industry in the state.

"We will set time-frame for the iron ore mining industry for tackling the pollution problem," said J P Singh, state chief secretary, adding that if the industries failed to act, strict action would be taken against them.

Addressing captains of various industries in the state in presence of Deputy Chief Minister Wilfred D'souza during the function organised by Goa state pollution control board, Singh said trucks were transporting iron ore without properly covering it are spilling it on the road, causing pollution.

"We will make it mandatory for the trucks to cover the ores with metal top", said Singh.

Goa government's stand is likely to affect the iron ore industry in the state, which has been facing criticism on pollution aspect. The official figures indicated that there are 80-odd mining leases in the state dealing in iron ore besides the ore brought from neighbouring Karnataka state.

"Public-private partnership is required to curb the pollution," said Singh adding that the industrialists should try to curb it, Goa Pollution Control Board Chairman U L Joshi added.
