Govt for transparency, accountability in rural schemes

The government today said it has decided to increase transparency and public accountability of rural schemes like NREGA by enforcing social audit and ensuring grievance redressal and by setting up district-level Ombudsman within the next 100 days.

In reply to a written question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Rural Development, Pradeep Jain said steps will be initiated for "increasing transparency and public accountability" in schemes for rural areas.

He said the ministry has adopted five-pronged strategy comprising of creation of awareness about schemes, people's participation, transparency, accountability and strict vigilance and monitoring of rural development programmes, including NREGA.

 

In reply to another question, Jain said, "The ministry has put in place a comprehensive system of monitoring of all its programmes to achieve the programme objective and maximise funds utilisation."
