Over 200 industrialists assemble in Chennai today and tomorrow (August 10-11) as Hindustan Lever chairman K B Dadiseth, Infosys Technologies chairman N R Narayana Murthy, Tata Sons director R Gopalakrishnan and Rajendra S Pawar of NIIT make presentations at various programmes associated with Confederation of Indian Industry's National Council meeting.

Dadiseth will make a presentation on the Y2K problem while Narayana Murthy will dwell on corporate governance with specific regard to his own experiences at Infosys.

Gopalakrishnan will discuss the countdown to the World Trade Organisation's forthcoming ministerial meeting at Seattle, dwelling on what Seattle is about and the unfounded fear in the minds, while Pawar will talk about electronic commerce, a term fast gaining currency in India.

 

Other events at the two-day meet include a CII-ICRIER seminar on tax reforms and private sector growth: international experience, a meeting of Indian Machine Tools Manufacturers Association, a meeting of CII's exports committee, a meeting of its Associations Council, a meeting of Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, a meeting of CII's Social Development Council, a meeting of its corporate governance committee, a meeting of its media committee, a meeting of its competitive council and its membership council meeting.

As many as 11 past presidents of the chamber will grace the occasion. They are Dhruv Sawhney, Jamshyd Godrej, Rajive Kaul, Jamshed Irani, Subodh Bhargava, N Kumar, Suresh Krishna, Rajesh Shah, Shekhar Datta, V Srinivasan and R J Sahahany.

The CII National Council is holding its meeting in Chennai after four years. The council meets almost every quarter, of which two-three meetings are held in Delhi and the rest in each of the four regions. During the last three years, the Southern region meetings were organised in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Cochin.

The meeting also happens to be the second full-fledged meeting of the council since Rahul Bajaj took over as the president of the chamber in April-end. s
