India may miss the power capacity addition target by as much as 15,000 Mw in the 11th Five-Year Plan as the Power Ministry has been able to achieve only 20 per cent of the planned electricity addition in the first two and half years of the Plan period (2007-12).
"So far (from April 2007-August 2009) only 17,000 Mw (which is a little over 20 per cent of the target) of electricity has been added," an official source said, adding that by the end of the Plan period it is likely that the ministry may miss the target by about 15,000 Mw.
The Ministry has set a target of adding over 78,000 Mw of electricity generation capacity by March 2012 and has placed the order to source equipment for the same.
Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia had earlier said that the country may miss power capacity addition target for the 11th plan period.
