With its eyes set on the coming General Election, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government today announced a Rs 20,000 crore package for improvement and laying of roads in the backward districts of Jammu and Kashmir and Kerala.
The decision was taken in the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) of the Union Cabinet, which are chaired by Pranab Mukherjee, External Affairs Minister here today.
The CCEA has allocated funds for 33 backward districts of these states for improvement in National and State Highways as also the rural roads.
The left-wing hit states are: Andhra Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Madhya pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa and Uttar Pradesh.
