The government will soon chalk up what it is calling a “succession plan” to deal with the problem of long vacancies on the boards of public sector companies. It will also simplify procedures for appointments of directors and chairmen of public sector undertakings.

Commenting on the delays in selection of chairpersons and directors, heavy industries and public enterprises minister Praful Patel said, “The government will ensure simplification of procedure and chalk up a succe-ssion plan so that there is no vacancy at the top level.”

At present, around 70 posts of chairpersons and whole-time directors and 300 posts of independent directors are vacant.

The minister was speaking at a function to release the 50th Public Enterprises Survey 2009-10. The survey is brought out by the Department of Public Enterprises on the performance of Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs). It was officially released by Patel in both the Houses of Parliament last month.

According to the survey, there were 249 CPSEs in 2009-10, of which 217 were in operation. The remaining 32 CPSEs were under construction.
