The government today said it is planning to double fruits and vegetables production by 2011-12, for which the Agriculture Ministry has implemented several schemes.
The schemes implemented since 2005-06 helped in raising production of vegetables by 15 per cent and fruits by 8 per cent by the end of 2007-08, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said in a written reply to Rajya Sabha.
India, the second-largest producer of vegetables and fruits, accounting for 13 per cent and 12 per cent, respectively of the world total production.
The country's share in the global market is about 1.38 per cent.
Pawar added that about 10-30 per cent of fruits and vegetables go waste due to poor handling and lack of post harvest management.
