Govt seeks application for Competition Comm member post

Gupta, who joined the Commission as a member in 2009, put in his papers in the wake of controversy over coal allocation scam

The government is looking to fill the post of a member at fair trade watchdog Competition Commission that fell vacant after the abrupt exit of H C Gupta in June following controversy over coal allocation scam.
 
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) keeps a tab on anti-competitive practices across sectors.
 
Corporate Affairs Ministry, which is the administrative ministry for CCI, has sought applications to fill up the post of member.
 
Besides Chairman, the Commission has posts for six members and currently, out of them, one is vacant.
 
Gupta, who joined the Commission as a member in 2009, put in his papers in the wake of controversy over coal allocation scam. Otherwise, his tenure was to end early next year.
 
 
He was the Coal Secretary between 2006 and 2009, the period which is under the scanner of the CBI for alleged irregularities in allocation of coal blocks.
 
Meanwhile, for CCI member, the government is looking for people with long years of experience.
 
One of the eligibility criteria is that the person should have at least 15 years of professional experience in international trade, economics, business, commerce, law, finance, accountancy, management, industry, public affairs or competition matters, including competition law and policy.
 
"Keeping in view the role and importance of CCI as a regulator, it is desirable that the applications from the persons with high integrity, eminence and reputation with requisite experience are forwarded for consideration," the Ministry has said.
 
The member can hold the office for a period five years and cannot continue beyond the age of 65 years.
 
Further, candidates, who are already in government service, would have to seek retirement from the service if selected as a CCI member.
 
Eligible candidates can submit their applications till October 7.
