The government will prepare a “back-up plan” to deal with the impact of the delayed monsoon on the country’s economic growth.
“A back-up plan will be required. As of today, the magnitude of what is likely to be required is not very high, not entirely known,” said Finance Secretary Ashok Chawla, adding that the delayed monsoon was a concern for the country.
He also added that a contingency plan to counter the situation “will evolve as the situation becomes more clear”.
Chawla said in order to help the farmers exploit groundwater resources to the maximum for production of crops like paddy, pulses and oilseeds which require surplus water, the government would ensure proper supply of power and diesel for them.
“Monsoon is still a problem in some parts of central India and parts of north-west India,” Chawla said.
